Guelph came out flying in this game. Kerby Rychel registered
the first scoring chances not even ten seconds into the game. Guelph dominated
the first period out-shooting the North Bay Battalion 16-6 in the first. Scoring
chances were equally lopsided 10-3 for Guelph.
Despite all the Storm pressure, Battalion goalie Jake Smith stood tall
making all the saves to keep the game scoreless.
The second period saw North Bay take over the shot count, as
they out shot Guelph in the period 12-7. Guelph did a job of keeping those shots
to the outside and the point as North Bay only generated four scoring chances
with three at even strength. Guelph only had seven shots in the period but made
the most of them recording six scoring chances. Ben Thompson scored the first
goal of the game on the power play to give the Battalion the lead. The lead was
short lived as Brock McGinn scored a minute later to tie the game up. McGinn
the Carolina second rounder could be in for a big series as he is one of the more
rested guys on the Storm. If you remember he was suspended 8 games for his hit
on Conner Sills of Plymouth in round one.
The third saw more of the same for North Bay as they again
dominated the shot count, 15-6 in the period. They also out chanced the Storm
7-6 in the period and 6-5 at even strength. The Storm again made the most of
their shots. North Bay took the lead again when Jamie Lewis scored a fluke goal
from the circle on a weak shot. Guleph again tied it up with a goal from
overager Zach Mitchell. The game remained tied at the end of third and this
game was off to OT.
OT did not last very long as Jason Dickenson scored 57
seconds in to give Guelph the victory in game one. Game two goes tonight at 7
pm.
