I tried to watch as many of the draft eligible players that I
could but with 14 eligible players on the two rosters that just wasn’t going to
happen. So I tried to highlight guys that are either the top prospects or stood
out in one way or another.
Cape Breton
Matt Paul, RD
Date of Birth 05/07/97
Season to Date: 3 games
played | 0 goal | 0 assists | 0 points
Paul really stood out in this game as one of the better puck
possession players. He took five official shots which lead all defencemen and was
second to Julien Pelletier for the team lead. He only had the five shots on
goal but had numerous other attempts that either missed the net or were
blocked. He was able to generate all these shots as he did a very good job of
carrying the puck into the zone with control. This seemed to be a little
unexpected as whenever he made those entries the Cape Breton announcer seemed
very surprised he was leading the rush. This is definitely something worth
watching for as the season progresses.
Jason Bell, LD
DOB 04/26/97
STD: 4GP | 1G | 3A | 4P
Bell also stood out for his offensive play. He only took one
shot but made it count as it was a dangerous shot that he scored on. Granted
the goal was a rebound that he tipped in but it showed the offensive awareness
Bell has to be able to read the play and to crash the net for the rebound opportunity.
He also recorded a very slick assist on the power play. Leading a two on one
break out he was able to get his pass through the defender to Kyle Farrel
who capped off the play. Bell also made a good play breaking up a two on one
where he got his stick in the passing lane and broke up what would have been a
good chance for Charlottetown.
Charlottetown
Kameron Kielly, RW
DOB: 12/13/1996
STD: 3GP | 4G | 1A | 5P
At 5 on 5 Kielly's line
with Mitchell Balmas and Alexandre Goulet was one the best for the Islanders.
They created a bunch of shots and opportunities and when they were on the ice
the puck was predominately in Cape Breton’s end. The line combined for 15 of the 24 Islander
shots, 10 of which were considered “dangerous.” Kielly had seven of those
shots, five of which were deemed dangerous. He played on the top power-play as
well as the top penalty kill, showing the coach trusts him at both ends of the
ice. His strong game was rewarded with 2 goals.
Daniel Sprong, RW
DOB: 03/17/97
STD: 3GP| 2G | 3A | 5P
Sprong
was clearly one of if not the best player on the ice for either teams. He has
some great hands and good speed which allow him to create all sorts of chances.
He has a solid shot with a quick release which he showed on the first goal of
the game. He's the type of player that teams really need to be aware of
when he's on the ice. He has a very good hockey IQ and is able to read plays as
they develop, none more prevalent than the power-play goal scored in the second
by the Islanders.
Sprong starts at the left point (bottom right of the image
#11).
Here he has quite a few options, he can pass it to the other
defencemen (not shown), he can pass it back to Filip Chlapik, or just take a
shot through traffic.
Sprong of course does none of these things, instead he
carries the puck towards the right face-off circle.
In doing that Sprong (now at the top right of the picture)
was able to draw both the forward and the defencemen to his side of the ice
leaving Kielly alone at the side of the net.
Kielly would have had an easy goal had he been able to
corral the puck. However he bobbled it a bit and somehow managed to get it to Chlapik (#14), who buried it into the empty side.
Sprong only received a secondary assist for his effort but
he showed the type of skill and vision he has on this play.
Final Score 5-4 Charlottetown
These two teams play again tomorrow night so I hope to have
something like this up again after that game.
