As promised, I watched the second game of the back to back
between the Charlottetown Islanders and the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. This
game was a blowout which made evaluating guys a little tougher.
Cape Breton
Evgeny Svechnikov, LW
Date of Birth 10/31/96
Season to Date: 4 GP | 3G |
5A | 8P
Svechnikov was one of the best players on the ice this game.
He is incredibly skilled, creating many chances. He had four shots all of which
were dangerous. He has some excellent stick handling that he showed on his
goal. He was alone in front of the net and made a couple dekes in tight to beat
the goalie. He also showed a good ability to make a play out of nothing. At one
point he was coming down the middle and the defender had him lined up and was
forcing him to the outside. Svechnikov made a spin-o-rama move to get behind
the defender and create a great scoring chance for himself. Svechnikov also did
a good job in his own end as he backed checked hard and created a few turnovers
as well. Based off of this viewing and from what I have read on Svechnikov, he
has placed himself firmly in top 30. He will definitely be in my October 2015
draft list.
Jason Bell, D
DOB 04/26/97
STD: 4GP | 1G | 3A
Another strong performance in this game by Bell. He was very
aggressive in the offensive zone, with many pinches. He created numerous
chances including two dangerous shots. He almost scored on a wraparound, which
gives you an idea of his willingness to play in the offensive zone. In terms of
his defensive play, nothing stood out to me as a major flaw. One thing I did
note was that he made a lot of “safe” plays when clearing the defensive zone.
What I mean by safe plays are he chipped the puck off the glass rather than
attempt a carry-out. I think this was mostly a by-product of the game though.
Bradley Lalonde, D
DOB: 08/01/97
STD: 4GP | 1G | 3A |
4P
Scored a nice goal when he snuck in from the point and was
left all alone in the slot. He has a decent shot that he uses on occasion. Only
two shots in this game but had a dangerous one.
Loik Leveille, D
DOB: 09/25/96
STD: 4GP | 1G | 1A |
2P
Had a very nice play where he took the puck in the defensive
zone carried it out through the neutral zone and into the offensive zone where
he promptly scored. The shot wasn’t the greatest as it knuckled so to speak but
it was still impressive to see a d-man make that kind of rush. He wasn’t perfect
defensively but he did a good job at times of defending Sprong keeping him to
the outside.
Charlottetown
Kameron Kielly, RW
DOB: 12/13/1996
STD: 4GP | 4G | 1A | 5P
Kielly was held off of the score sheet this game; however he
was again one of the most productive players. His line with Mitchell Balmas and
Alexandre Goulet was again one of the best at driving play for the Islanders.
In a game in which the whole Islander team was outplayed it was good to see
this line getting offensive zone time and some chances. Kielly had four shots
and again true to form all were dangerous.
Daniel Sprong, RW
DOB: 03/17/97
STD: 4GP| 2G | 3A | 5P
This was a tough game for all of the Islanders and Sprong
was no exception. He was in his own end quite a bit. Despite that he still was
able to show off his high skill level creating chances. He has good
stickhandling that he uses to deke defenders and get a clean shot on net. He
had four shots in the game, two that were dangerous. Sprong also showed a
physical side to his game that wasn’t seen previously. This may partly have
been out of frustration.
Filip Chlapik, C
DOB: 06/03/97
STD: 4GP | 3G | 4A |
7P
Chlapik had the best game among the Islanders. He scored the
lone goal on a nice pass from behind the net by Spenser Cobbold. He also lead
the team is shots with five as well as tied for the lead in dangerous shots
with four. Chlapik does play on a line with Sprong but from my two viewings
Chlapik is skilled enough that he can hold his own playing with Sprong and doesn’t
need to be carried.
Final Score 7-1 Cape Breton
