Sherbrooke Phoenix vs Val-d’Or Foreurs – September 20th 2014

Video quality wasn’t great for this game and both feeds had French speaking announcers, so I wasn’t able to follow as many players as I had hoped. The ones I was able to follow I tried to go into a little bit more depth.

Sherbrooke

Kay Schweri, RW
DOB: 12/28/96
STD: 4GP | 1G | 9A | 10P

Schweri is a playmaking winger with a quick skating stride. He did a good job in this game at fighting off defenders and keeping the puck on his stick until he could find an open man. He was true to form in this game recording three assists. That gives him nine already this season compared to just the one goal. He does have a decent shot; he just waits for the best opportunity to use it. Of his four shots this game, two were dangerous.

Jermey Roy, D
DOB: 05/14/97
STD: 4GP | 0G | 3A | 3P

Roy showed in this game why he's one of the premier offensive defencemen in this draft class. He is an excellent skater who is able to use that stride to get zone exits with possession and in-turn controlled zone entries for his team. At times in this game it looked like he was playing wing the way he jumped into the play and joined the offence. What he needs to improve upon is his reads in those types of situations. At one point he was so far up in the play that when Val-d’Or got the puck they essentially had a two-on-one as a forward had to be back covering up for Roy. That led to a couple of excellent chances for the Foreurs. Roy did record one assist in the game but it was just a simple pass to his D partner who scored on the shot.

Val-d’Or

Anthony Richard, C
DOB: 12/20/1996
STD: 4GP | 1G | 2A | 3P

He had one of the best age 16 seasons in the entire CHL putting up 52 points in 66 games. What kept him out of my top 20 was that from my understanding he played a lot with Anthony Mantha who was one of the best players in the entire CHL last season. It was import for me this game to see something that showed he was more than just a Mantha creation. He definitely is a playmaker as it seemed like whenever he gained the zone he immediately turned and waited for a teammate to pass to. Much like Schweri, it’s not like Richard is not looking to shoot he just waits for a good opportunity. Richard took four shots in this game and all of them were dangerous.

He also showed some two way play in this game. He was physical which is good to see from a player who is 5’09. He also was trusted by his coach to play on the penalty kill both 4 v 5 and 3 v 5. He made a nice defensive play in the first when shorthanded; he stripped the puck away from Daniel Audette and set up a two-on-one chance. He had a similar play when he was the lone foreword in a 3 v 5. He chipped the puck out of the zone and almost beat the defender for the loose puck. It was a valiant effort however he needs to be more aware of the situation. In that case already down two players there was no reason to be aggressive. To make matters worse he was called for a penalty giving Sherbrooke an even longer 5 on 3.

Final Score 7-4 Sherbrooke
